New research suggests that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
