Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
